Survey of archives of UK airline operators

Update on the airline operators survey – 1 October 2024

The first iteration of the Survey has been completed and we are delighted to be able to publish it here, in pdf form.

This work would not have been possible without the commitment and support of a large number of people.

The survey guide was researched, compiled and edited by Lucy Bonner, formerly archivist of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Alison Turton, the Business Archives Council’s representative on the AAAI’s steering group, and many volunteers. Without their enthusiasm and tireless work, this resource could not have been produced.

The AAAI is particularly grateful to Maurice Wickstead and Air-Britain who kindly gave permission for material from Maurice Wickstead, Airlines of the British Isles Since 1919 (Air Britain, 2014) to be freely used in creating the survey entries. Particular thanks are also due to Guy Halford-Macleod who kindly authored an introductory essay on the history of the airline sector in the UK and to Tim Powell, Places of Deposit Manager at The National Archives, for preparing a useful guide to relevant archives amongst the collections of The National Archives. In addition, the AAAI is grateful to The National Archives for providing funding toward the costs of the survey on which the guide is based through its Networks for Change programme.

The guide can be viewed here

We hope shortly to be able to bring this to you as a searchable resource.  In the meantime, I hope you find this survey interesting and informative.
